Residents

The Department of Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC has a long tradition of training excellent clinical surgeons. A hallmark of the program is the diversity of the training experience, which includes training in multiple sites and environments. The culmination of the training experience is the chief resident year, which is predominately spent at the Los Angeles General Medical Center. The chief resident, with attending supervision, is responsible for running the various Los Angeles General Medical Center surgical services. This program offers residents exposure to a wide range of pathology and severity of disease, along with a high level of autonomy. After completing five years of clinical training, the graduating resident will have gained extensive experience as a clinical leader and the confidence to tackle any clinical situation.

Another feature of the surgical residency program is the unwavering commitment to surgical education from the department’s leadership. The Department of Surgery earmarks more than $1.5 million each year in support of the educational programs for residents, with a robust organizational structure that integrates clinical experience with the latest skills lab, simulation and didactic instruction. This investment in resident education is protected, ensuring that all residents are able to participate in the curriculum without distractions or nonessential clinical duties.
