About the Division of Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care

Los Angeles General Medical Center is a busy and thriving medical center that serves the greater Los Angeles area. The Acute Care Surgery (ACS) Division includes Trauma Surgery, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care.

Los Angeles General Medical Center is an American College of Surgeons verified Level I Trauma Center, and is one of the busiest trauma centers in the United States. Over 5,300 trauma patients are admitted annually, with a penetrating rate of 22%, ICU admission rate of 45%, and severe trauma (ISS > 15) rate of 23%.

Trauma is the leading cause of death in persons under the age of 40 and affects a substantial percentage of Americans. The estimated annual cost for the care of trauma victims nationwide exceeds $200 billion. Los Angeles General Medical Center is a leading center in the field of trauma; pioneering research and offering new and innovative treatment options which improve trauma outcomes across the globe.

Los Angeles General Medical Center is located in the heart of one of the largest and busiest metropolitan areas in the United States. The hospital has more than 100 ICU beds, and over 4000 emergency general surgery patients are admitted annually.

The ACS Division has 12 full-time faculty members and 8 fellows actively involved in the day-to-day care of patients, educational conferences, and research activities.

In addition, the ACS Division has a formal affiliation with the U.S. Navy: helping to train military physicians, nurses, and paramedical personnel in the field of trauma.
