Advanced Trauma Life Support Courses (ATLS)
ATLS is an American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma course designed to teach the basic principles of trauma care. The course focuses on management of immediately life-threatening injuries and strives to create a common language with which to communicate about trauma. The standard course includes didactics, skills stations and testing, spread over a two-day period. Also offered is the mATLS course that replaces much of the didactic teaching with computer modules completed prior to the start of the course. The ATLS course has several interactive lectures, skills stations and testing, with a duration of 1.5 days. ATLS is a fast-paced course designed for providers with prior exposure to trauma care or providers that have spent time acquiring basic trauma knowledge prior to the start of the course. Additionally, ATLS instructor courses are offered for providers that have been identified (during their ATLS course) as potential instructors.
Courses:
- Two ATLS courses are offered annually.
- The program has trained more than 500 ATLS providers and 35 instructors since 1993.
- The ATLS Student Course Manual 10th edition is used for teaching the course.
