Neonatal Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program

The Neonatal Medicine Division and its faculty have an objective to provide the environment and guidance for the neonatal fellow to develop into a superbly skilled clinician and to provide a comprehensive training program which will foster the best clinical as well as research environment. This is accomplished by providing technical as well as basic research skills and by giving opportunity for growth and leadership by exposure to superb researchers in both clinical and bench research. The neonatal fellow is encouraged to participate with researchers in newborn, obstetrical, and subspecialty fields of pediatrics to supplement his or her particular interests and research goals. Bench research in molecular biology is achieved through their rotation in molecular biology laboratory.

Pediatric Subspecialty Fellowships are three years in duration, and fellows must achieve both excellence in clinical care and excellence in the scholarship skills of research methodology and proficiency in teaching. Because Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellows are being trained to assume leadership roles in academic pediatrics, a goal of our fellowship training program is academic productivity (scientific research papers, grants, etc.). Thus, fellows need education in scholarship skills, specifically research methodology and proficiency in teaching. Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program has been restructured to provide excellent opportunities for fellows to engage in scholarly activities. Fellows can choose their research activity thru vast number of programs carried out in the division of Neonatal medicine or through various subspecialty research activities at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Los Angeles General Medical Center.

At the beginning of each year, core curriculum talks about biostatistics, clinical and laboratory research methodologies, study design, and preparation of research protocols are given to all fellows. Interested fellows are assigned to molecular biology laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Parviz Minoo, Director of our Basic Science Research Program, to learn about basic and translational research. Clinical research is offered through state of art Developmental Cardiovascular Research Program and innovative Clinical Pulmonary Research Program of the division where fellows have opportunities to initiate and independently perform clinical studies under faculty supervision.

Fellows are expected to present their projects in yearly research in progress meetings and present their research in regional as well as national conferences. Fellows get experience with presenting abstracts to scientific meetings and mentored for manuscript publication.
