About the Colorectal Surgery Division

We are nationally and internationally recognized for our pioneering work in minimally invasive treatment of benign polyps, colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease and anorectal diseases. More than 90 percent of our colorectal surgeries are performed laparoscopically, compared with dramatically lower rates nationwide. Our expertise with minimally invasive procedures offers our patients shorter, more comfortable recovery periods.

We are among only a few programs in the nation performing combined endo-laparoscopic surgery (CELS) to remove difficult colon polyps and avoid colon resections. Using the latest minimally invasive techniques, we treat one of the highest volumes of patients with inflammatory bowel disease in the Los Angeles area. We provide our patients with the highest level of care, including surgical treatments and techniques not widely available at other hospitals.

We consider training the next generation of colorectal surgeons to be a key part of our mission. Our goal is to help our residents and fellows become proficient in all the procedures we do as colorectal surgeons, including oncologic surgeries and the latest minimally invasive techniques.

Our colorectal program has maintained a full accreditation status for 10 years – the longest accreditation that the ACGME bestows. Our two colorectal ACGME residencies are the cornerstone of our program. We also offer the opportunity for research fellowships and an anorectal physiology fellowship.

Our colorectal fellow supervises the colorectal program at Los Angeles General Medical Center, one of the largest and busiest in the nation. Los Angeles General Medical Center has a diverse patient population, many of whom do not have regular access to proper medical care. This allows an almost unparalleled opportunity to work with a wide variety of cases as well as conditions in an advanced state that many physicians never see.

The high volume at Los Angeles General Medical Center allows for a remarkable level of responsibility and autonomy in decision-making.
