About the Fellowship Program in Pediatric Infectious Diseases

The Los Angeles General Medical Center Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship program is under the supervision of faculty of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and is open to qualified pediatric residents with strong research interests.

MCA’s Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship offers:

  • Well-balanced training in clinical care and mentored clinical, laboratory and translational research conducted on-site
  • Unique opportunity to train at MCA, the only clinic in Los Angeles providing a full spectrum of care to HIV+ pregnant women, children, adolescents and their families, regardless of their ability to pay. Clinic services include:
    • Prevention of mother-to-child-transmission of HIV
    • Pediatric, adolescent and adult HIV care delivered in a family-centered care model
    • Pediatric Infectious Diseases specialty care
  • Opportunity to work with MCA’s multidisciplinary staff from:
    • Pediatric and Adult Infectious Diseases with HIV specialty
    • General Pediatrics
    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Internal medicine, Family Medicine, and Med-Peds
    • Neurology
    • Psychiatry
    • Psychology
    • Social work
    • Nutrition
  • Opportunity to assume primary care responsibilities for the patient’s care at MCA or the duration of their training experience in their own HIV and ID clinic providing the opportunity to practice continuity of care
  • Robust options and training for mentored clinical research and laboratory investigation, based on individual interests
  • Pediatric ID clinic treating HIV as well as:
    • Tuberculosis
    • Fungal infections
    • Skin and soft tissue infections
    • Bone and joint infections
    • Infections requiring home intravenous antibiotics
    • Sexually transmitted diseases
    • Parasitic diseases and other travel related complaints
    • Fever of unknown origin
  • • Inpatient Pediatric ID training at Los Angeles General Medical Center includes an extremely diverse patient population presenting with the entire spectrum of pediatric infectious diseases. The Medical Center has:
    • Pediatric Emergency Department
    • Level three NICU
    • Burn Center
    • Level one trauma unit
  • Inpatient Pediatric ID training for 2 months at CHLA, where infections associated with immunocompromised children, including solid and bone marrow transplant patients, are seen
  • Vigorous didactic educational program including Case Conferences, Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, Research Conferences, and Fellowship Lecture Series and Board Reviews
  • Opportunity to supervise rotating pediatric residents and medical students under the direct supervision of a faculty member
  • 1 fellowship position per year for a duration of 3 years
