Monday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), and there are events happening everywhere.
Elder abuse is a pressing problem even in the best of times, but during the COVID-19 era there’s even more concern, and the problem is that it’s difficult to quantify it.
“The sad reality is, we have no good centralized mechanism for getting a handle on how much elder abuse is out there. Which means we don’t have a really good way to measure what kind of increase there has been,” Dr. Laura Mosqueda, Dean of the Keck School of Medicine of USC and a professor of family medicine and geriatrics, said on the GeriPal podcast released last week. Mosqueda also is Director of the National Center of Elder Abuse, based at USC.
You can take part in the WEAAD webinar from 10-11:30 Pacific. There’s also an elder abuse Twitter chat (#WEAADchat) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. PDT.
