After spending one winter break on a service trip to Angola and Ghana in the sixth grade, Cassidy Muir’s perspective was forever changed. The service trip, and the others that followed thereafter, shaped her into a person dedicated to helping others, especially those in underserved communities across the globe. Muir’s interest in a career in medicine was further spurred by the time she spent in Haiti and Kenya, where she saw firsthand the often challenging living circumstances and the health needs of people in the two countries.

Muir graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 2016 where she worked in a nutritional sciences lab focused on serum vitamin A status in the developing world. She also volunteered as a tutor at a local underperforming middle school. After completing her bachelor’s degree, Cassidy worked as a clinical scribe in a geriatric clinic that serves a diverse population in Chicago. To prepare herself for medical school and a future career serving the global community, Muir matriculated in the Keck School of Medicine of USC Master of Science in Global Medicine program. The program offered her unique opportunities to interact with experts in the global health field and to learn how to apply the knowledge she gained in the classroom to current issues worldwide.

This fall, Muir will attend the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and continue her passion for service as part of the global health honors program. With renewed energy and equipped with knowledge and skills gained from the global medicine program, Muir is excited to take the next step in her journey toward a career as a physician.
