CDC Director Rochelle Walensky offered congratulations to the Class of 2021 and their families during her KSOM Commencement address, urging graduates to “aim big and strike high” in a world that needs physicians more than ever.
“Through this experience, one day at a time, one patient at a time, you have reached a summit together. And you will reach many more,” said Walensky, who is the 19th director of the CDC.
“Like all of you today, 26 years ago I sat at my medical school graduation and aspired simply to do good,” she said. “My plan was to heal the sick, to comfort the dying, and help each patient one at a time.”
Reflecting on her career, Walensky shared advice with the graduates, urging them to follow their passions, treat every patient as family, and care for those who rarely receive care—the underserved.
“Let them complete their story. Listen to them. Stay at their bedside a little bit longer and learn what stood in their way,” she said.
