Alum donates more than 20,000 masks

Paul Nassif, BS ’84, MD ’92, partnered with LA Made, a clothing company in downtown Los Angeles to make face masks for healthcare workers and others at a time of serious shortages of all personal protective equipment. Inspired by the Million Mask Challenge, he struck a deal with the company to make fabric masks at cost to donate to Keck Medicine of USC, New York University Langone Medical Center, Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. When donors contributed two masks, Dr. Nassif matched their donation by paying for a third mask himself—increasing their gift by 50 percent. He has arranged for the donation of more than 20,000 masks to the hospitals, including more than 5,000 to Keck Medicine of USC. In addition, Dr. Nassif gave away thousands of masks on his website and included hand sanitizer with each mask.

It felt right to do it,” he said. “It kept people employed and added some protection for a lot of people at a time when there were no masks available.”

To the health care workers, Dr. Nassif said, “You are putting yourself on the front line, which is very dangerous. God be with you. Be safe. I’m not sure what we would do without caregivers like you. Thank you so much for your service and all you do to help us.”
